The Pac-10: Week 3 in review

Reality caught up with the Pac-10 this week with only USC, Oregon and Oregon State posting wins. This is a young conference and it was exposed Saturday. California, UCLA and Washington were humiliated, while the Arizona schools lost to unranked teams from the Mountain West. That means after only three weeks into the college football season, every Pac-10 team except for Southern Cal and Oregon has a loss.

Here's what we know:

USC is scary good

Is their any doubt they will be hoisting the national championship trophy in January? The Trojan defense is mean, fast and swarming. Mark Sanchez is sharp and their 4th string running back would be the starter on every other NCAA team. Their 35-3 annihilation of Ohio State proves that USC is in a class by itself, and that the Big Ten's reputation will suffer for a while longer.

Oregon better recruit more quarterbacks

Three weeks into the season, Oregon is down to its third string QB. During the first overtime of Oregon's narrow 32-26 victory over Purdue, Ducks QB Justin Roper (who became the starter after Nate Costa tore his ACL and Meniscus in camp) went down with a sprained knee. He is expected to miss 2-4 weeks. After injuries forced the Ducks to finish the season with their fifth string signal caller in 2007, many in Eugene are probably wondering if Mike Bellotti crossed a gypsy. No team in recent memory (except maybe UCLA) has had so much bad luck with the health of their quarterbacks. The silver lining for Duck fans is that backups Jeremiah Masoli and Chris Harper have seen a lot of playing time, and aren't bad.

The conference embarassed itself Saturday

What can you say? There's no shame in losing to Maryland or BYU, but to get completely blown out? The Bruins couldn't even manage a single point after beating a ranked SEC team two weeks ago. Arizona proved they're no where near the big time with a pathetic loss to New Mexico. But what really put cherry on the conference's reputation Saturday was the No. 15 Sun Devils losing the the lowly Runnin' Rebels of UNLV. Looking ahead to Georgia next weekend may have cost the Devils a chance at the BCS. Shameful.
